Paolo Borghi was born in 1983 in a small town in the Emilia Romagna area, Italy. Starting out as a carpenter, an expert in the building and designing of stairs and other tailor-made woodwork projects. He went on to graduate from CETOM, Florence, in music therapy in 2013, and he turned his talent and skillful hands to playing the Hang instrument.

For many years he has continued to search for peculiar and unusual instruments, more times than not he’s made his own instruments, such as Tubular Bells, Flamenco, Cuban Cajóns, Tongue Drums, and other percussion instruments. He used plywood to substitute animal skin or fur and other instruments were made from salvaged or recycled material.

He has always been extremely keen on road art and animation, nurturing a strong passion for music, in particular percussion. He has played with various percussion, dance and theatre companies.

His biggest passion is for the Hang instrument; a metallic percussion invented by two Swiss craftsmen, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. Paolo Borghi bought his Hang in Bern, Switzerland in April 2007, choosing from 30 different instruments. His talent is unmatched in Italy, currently the owner of 4 different varieties of the Hang instrument, each varying in key and production date.

Apart from the Hang, Paolo plays other instruments; Vietnamese Jew harp, West African Djembè, Tibetan Singing Bowls, Gong, Tubular bells (or Chimes), Sansula, Didgeridoo and his self-made percussions. He has always strived to synchronize his sound with his own internal well being and that of others.

In February and May 2012 he participated in the TV talent show ‘Italia’s Got Talent’ on Canale 5 (Chanel 5). Competing against different Hang players, he received tremendous praise and success from the critics and the public, going through to the finals. For the finale of another TV series presented by Maria De Filippi, “Amici”, he played with the Annalisa Scarrone orchestra during the performance of the circus performer Devin De Bianchi.

In 2012 he was invited to represent Italy at various Notte Bianca (White Night), prestigious evenings in Italy, in places like Florence and Rovigo.

Paolo was the opening act for Morgan e le Sagome in Piazza Della Pilotta, Parma. He participated in the “Creo contest” on MTV’s ‘Your Noise’ and has played for various festivals including; Ferrara Busker Festival from 2007 to 2014; Festival Arte di Strada “Ratataplan” in San Remo; Borgo Busker Festival in Faenza; Imola in Musica; Mercantia Certaldo (international festival of street theatre); Apriti Borgo and Fasti Verulani. The list of festivals and concerts is endless as he has performed in almost all Italian regions and has had guest appearances abroad including London and Barcelona.

He has been a temporary percussionist with Fabrizio Benevelli at percussion evenings in the Officina delle Arti in Reggio Emilia, with guests Kuniko Kato and Simone Beneventi.

In May 2013, he held a concert for the president of the Republic of Ecuador at the Casa Della Musica, where other ministers and government bodies were in attendance.

In June 2013, he played with the drummer and percussionist Rishi Vlote inside the Kateřinské Jeskyni cave, near Brno (Czech Republic) whilst on tour. One of his most important tour dates was playing at Villa Bocelli, in the presence of, along with others, Andrea Bocelli, John Legend, Lionel Richie, John Elkann and Sofia Loren.

In 2014 and 2015, Paolo played for festivals in South Africa, with many international brands such as Audi, Smart, Lamborghini, Mini etc.

In 2009, he recorded and produced by GRS his first video clip, a melody played only with the Hang. He’s currently performing Hang solo concerts, travelling around Italy and abroad holding workshops about his creation: SONUM. Soundtracks for massage using low frequency and harmonic instruments such as the Didgeridoo, Gong, Tibetan Singing Bowls and so on. Paolo has also been producing soundtracks, featuring the Hang in particular, for gyms and wellness centres.

Paolo, in partnership with Florence Dance School, continues with shows and performances on Ponte Vecchio, in Palazzo Vecchio and at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello.

Sales of almost 4000 copies of his CD titled “Essentia” encouraged him to produce his new CD released in 2013 called “BLU RACCONTI SONORI” (Blue Tales Soundtrack), featuring Hang solo, voice, guitar, piano, string and other instruments.
